Germany is a central European country belonging to the European Union. In German the country is called Deutschland.

Where is Germany located? Germany is open to the north on the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It has common borders with Denmark in the north, with Poland and the Czech Republic in the east, with Austria and Switzerland in the south, with France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands in the west.

Germany is a federal state of sixteen Länder (states). In July 1990, the five former East German Länder, dissolved in 1952, were reconstituted and in October 1990, the date of the reunification of the two Germanys, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Saxony were added to the eleven West German Länder: Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Schleswig-Holstein and the three city states of Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg.

The western Länder are much more populated than those in the east, which account for 30% of the population. 100 of the total area, just over one-fifth of the population. The Länder dominating the German economy are also the most populous: North Rhine-Westphalia had 17 679 000 inhabitants in 1993, far ahead of Bavaria (11 993 500) and Baden-Württemberg (10 693 000).

Berlin, the largest city of the country, became again the capital of Germany after the reunification of October 1990. The other big cities of the country (classified by sizes) are Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Bremen, Frankfurt-on-the- -Main, Essen, Dortmund, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Hannover, Leipzig and Nuremberg.

Germany has an area of 356 970 km². Stretching between 47 and 52 degrees north latitude, and between 6 and 14 degrees east longitude, the country offers varied landscapes. But relief, like hydrography, favors fragmentation rather than unity of territory. Germany can be divided into three large natural groups: the Northern Plain, Middle Hercynian Germany (Mittelgebirge), and Southern and Subalpine Southern Germany, south of the Danube.
