Rwanda, which covers an area of 26,338 km², is one of the smallest states in Africa. The country is made up of highlands located on the watershed of the Nile and Congo basins. To the west, a mountainous massif, with an average elevation of 2,740 m, dominates Lake Kivu (1,460 m) and extends to the north by the Virunga volcanic chain, culminating in the Karisimbi volcano (4,507 m).

The central plateau, with an average elevation of 1,700 m, is crossed by rivers and ravines filled with alluvium, which form well-cut hills. To the east, towards the Tanzanian border, savannas, lakes and marshes follow one another along the Kagera River, which is the most important source of the Nile.

The subequatorial climate is tempered by altitude. There are two dry seasons, one short in January, the other spreading from May to September. The rainfall pattern is irregularly distributed. Precipitation is abundant on the peaks (more than 2,000 mm on the Congo-Nile ridge) but decreases on the eastern plateaus (787 mm).

Mean annual temperatures range from 19 ° C in Kigali to 22.8 ° C in the Lake Kivu region, with a high nighttime amplitude in the mountains where they can reach 0 ° C.
