Where is GUINEA-BISSAU located on the map?

Guinea-Bissau is bordered on the north by Senegal, on the south and east by Guinea, and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. It is located in Africa.

It is a small country which is only at the 133rd position on the list of countries according to their surface. it is 36 120 km², of which 28 000 km² of land and 8 120 km² of sea.

The landscape is slightly undulating, but at no point does it exceed 200 meters above sea level. The coastline is particularly jagged. Long river estuaries and inlets penetrate far inland.

The country can be divided into three main regions:

  • The coastal zone. It is very fragmented and often invaded by the mangrove.
  • Plains and wide valleys. Periodically flooded, they are favorable to the cultivation of rice.
  • The slight reliefs (hills). This area presents very good conditions for the cultivation of cashew (nuts) and peanuts (oil and peanuts).

Detailed map of GUINEA-BISSAU … Where exactly is Guinea-Bissau located?

Guinea-Bissau is one of the well-watered countries of Africa, despite a fairly long dry season. Precipitation feeds rivers that are often abundant.

According to Aquastat, the average annual rainfall is 1,577 millimeters, for an area of 36,120 square kilometers, an annual precipitation volume of 56.96 cubic kilometers, rounded to 57 km3 (against, for example 78,597 km3 in Portugal, country 2.6 times larger – or 25.84 km3 in Belgium, a little less extensive country).

From this precipitated volume, evapotranspiration consumes 41 km3. There are 16 cubic kilometers of resources produced in the country (internally). Guinea-Bissau also receives a significant amount of water from neighboring countries (mainly Guinea through the Rio Corubal, but also from Senegal via the Rio Geba) and amounts to 15 km3. The total water resources of the country thus reach 31 cubic kilometers annually (1 km3 = 1 billion m3).

The quantity of water available (which includes all the resources created internally, plus any external inputs) is therefore 31 km3 per year, ie for an estimated population of 1,700,000 inhabitants in 2008, not less than 18,000 m3 per capita and per year.

The climate is tropical, hot and humid. As in neighboring Guinea, rainfall is almost everywhere abundant. The rainy season runs from June to November with southwest wind; the dry season goes from December to May and is accompanied by harmattan, or dry wind come from the northeast.
