Where is DOMINICAN REPUBLIC located on the map?
It is in the heart of the Caribbean, between Puerto Rico and Cuba, that the island of Hispaniola welcomes you in a sumptuous environment. One third of the island is occupied by Haiti to the west, and the other two thirds are occupied by the Dominican Republic to the east. The country, 400 kilometers long and about 300 kilometers wide, has the distinction of sheltering some 1500 kilometers of coastline including nearly 600 kilometers of beaches. This is how it has become one of the largest seaside destinations in the Caribbean.
It is in the heart of Central America, east of Jamaica and Cuba and west of Puerto Rico, that the island of Hispaniola is located. Baptized by Christopher Columbus, the island is divided today into two territories: Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Nestled in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, halfway between Florida to the north and Venezuela to the south, the territory is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Caribbean America. It must be admitted that its central location combined with its particular geography make it an island of choice for a dream vacation in the tropics.
The geography of the Dominican Republic has unique characteristics. Two different seas bath the country’s coastline: the Caribbean to the South, and the Atlantic to the North. Despite a facade of more than 1,500 kilometers on the ocean, the island is home to dry areas like around Lake Enriquillo in the western region. Beyond its 600 kilometers of dream beaches, there are also, in its center, mountains and cordilleras. This mountainous area is fresher and more fertile than the rest of the Dominican territory.
The geography of the Dominican Republic is also distinguished by its striking differences with neighboring Haiti. While the latter is often a desert, the Dominican Republic is very green, inhabited by thick tropical forests. There are also desert valleys populated by cacti, vast agricultural plains and the highest peak of the Caribbean, the pico Duarte, culminating at more than 3000 meters of altitude.
