Where is MYANMAR (Burma) located on the map?

Burma or Myanmar, formerly Union of Burma, then Union of Myanmar, is a continental Southeast Asian country with a common border with Bangladesh, China, India, Laos and Thailand. It is bordered by the Andaman Sea to the south and by the Bay of Bengal to the southwest, with about 2,000 kilometers of coastline in total.

Since 1962, the country has seen a series of military dictatorships. From 1988 to 2011, Burma was officially led by the State Council for Peace and Development. This junta officially gave way in 2011 to a civilian power led by one of its former members, but the weight of the military hierarchy remains preponderant in the facts. The relative liberalization of the country that has since confirmed led the European Union and the United States to suspend or lift in April and September 2012 the embargo they imposed on the country since the 1990s, with the exception of weapons.

Burma is divided into seven “regions” and seven states. Each state or region is subdivided into communes, districts and villages. The main cities: Yangon, Mandalay and Pagan are divided into communes.

The seven regions form what the Burmese call “Burma Proper”, that is to say the country of the Burmese. Those are :

  • Ayeyarwady region (Irrawaddy delta, capital: Pathein);
  • Region of Bago (capital: Pegou);
  • Magway Region (capital: Magwe);
  • Mandalay region (capital: Mandalay);
  • Sagaing Region (capital: Sagaing);
  • Tanintharyi Region (Tenasserim, capital: Tavoy);
  • Yangon region (capital: Rangoon).

Weather

From october till March is the cool and dry season in most part of Myanmar, when one can enjoy a nice,bright and sunny weather with clear blue sky.It is considered as the peak tourist season as the weather is most agreeable with milder temperatures and coincident with several common in ternational holidays.The average day temperature in areas like Yangon,Maanadalay and Bagan can be between 25 and 35 degree Celsius but the night time and early morning temperature is between 15 and 25 degree Celsius.The temperature on Shan Mountains (Inle Lake and Kyaing Tong).can be slightly above the freezing point at night time and pleasantly cool during the day time. In the northern Kachoin state temperature can drop below freezing point.

From June till September is the monsoon season. The coastal and delta region of Myanmar received afternoon and early evening showers daily. Rainy season is considered an off-peak period for tourism in Myanmar. However, the rainy season is also a good time to visit as a lot of areas have very pleasant rains with milder tropical temperatures. The rainy season makes green scenery everywhere. The rain keeps the dust down in some dusty areas like Bagan and Mandalay. Photographers will have great sunset and sunrise pictures due to the cloud formation in the rainy season. Another good reason is that visitors would receive discounted low-season prices in hotels and airlines. April and May are the hottest months when maximum temperatures in many parts of the country exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

There is no more coveted destination than Myanmar (Burma) today. Tourism has experienced an incredible (and sometimes disturbing) boom since the liberation of Aung San Suu Kyi and a trip to Myanmar must be meticulously prepared, as the offer does not always meet the demand.

Beyond the fad, the old Burma (its name before 1989) is nonetheless an extraordinary country with some of the most magical sites in the world. These include the fabulous ruined city of Bagan or the sparkling Paya Shwedagon. “Burma, a country that is different from everything you know,” said Rudyard Kipling in 1898. More than a century later, you can say the same thing about this country.
