Bulgaria is a country in Southern Europe, located in the south-east of the Balkan Peninsula, and a member of the European Union. In Bulgarian, the country is called Bălgarija.

Bulgaria is bordered on the north by Romania, on the east by the Black Sea, on the south by Turkey and Greece, on the west by Serbia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

The country is divided into two region: South-West Bulgaria and South-Central Bulgaria (Yougozapadna i Youjna Tsentralna Bulgaria) and North-East Bulgaria (Severina i Istochna Bulgaria) by Eurostat. Then Bulgaria is divided into twenty-eight administrative regions (oblasti), whose list is as follows: Blagoevgrad, Burgas, Shumen, Dobritch, Gabrovo, Kardzhali, Khaskovo, Kyustendil, Lovech, Montana, Pazardzhik, Pernik, Pleven, Plovdiv, Razgrad, Ruse, Silistra, Sliven, Smolyan, Sofia-city, Sofia, Stara Zagora, Targovishte, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, Vidin, Vratsa, Yambol.

The largest cities in the country are Sofia, the capital, Plovdiv, an industrial city in the center of the country and a major communications hub, and Varna, the main seaport.

The area of Bulgaria is 110 994 km². More than half of Bulgarian territory is hilly or mountainous. The average altitude is about 480 m. Two mountain ranges cross the country from west to east. To the north, Mount Balkan stretches from west to east of Serbia to the Black Sea. To the south, the Rhodope, a large irregular mass, separates Bulgaria from Greece; at its western end, the Rila massif culminates at Musala at 2 925 m. The main plains lie to the north, along the Danube (fertile plain of the Dobruja stretching in northeastern Bulgaria and south-east Romania), and in the center, between Balkan and Rhodope, where a series of depressions, notably the Thracian plain, border the Marica Valley.
