Where is ALBANIA located on the map?
Albania is a European country located in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. In Albanian the country is called Shqipëria which means “the land of eagles”.
Albania is bordered to the north-west by Serbia and Montenegro, to the east by the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), to the south by Greece and to the west by the Adriatic Sea.
The capital and main city is Tirane, with an estimated population in 2001 of 343,078 inhabitants. Other major cities are the port and the industrial center of Durres, the agricultural center of Elbasan, the ancient city of Shkodër and the port of Vlorë.
Albania is one of the smallest countries in Europe. It stretches 345 km from north to south and 145 km from west to east. Its total area is 28 748 km². The relief of Albania is mainly mountainous with peaks between 2 100 and 2 600 m. To the north, in the Albanian Alps, forming the southern limit of the Dinaric Alps, stands the highest point in the country, Mount Korab (2,764 m). In the center and in the south of the country, the mountains are interspersed with high plateaus and basins.
The lowlands, which account for less than a quarter of the country’s total area, border the Adriatic coast north of Vlorë. The soil of the coastal plains is rich but marshy. Most of the rivers flow from east to west towards the Adriatic Sea. The most important of them, the Drim, the Shkumbi and the Mat, have wide valleys. The three big lakes of the country, Shkodër in the north-west, Ohrid and Préspa in the east, span the borders.
