Uruguay, in long form the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, is a Southern Cone country of South America, located in the south of Brazil and east of Argentina, from which it is separated by the river Uruguay which gave it its name.
Where is Uruguay located geographically? Uruguay is a country in southeastern South America between Brazil in the north and Argentina in the south. More precisely, it is located between meridians 53 and 58 west (longitude) and between parallels 30 and 35 south (latitude).
Its surface area is 176,215 km2 including 173,620 km2 of land and 2,600 km2 of water, it shares 1,564 km of borders with its neighbors: 985 km in the north with Brazil and 579 in the south and west with Argentina. To the east, it has 660 km of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. It is the second smallest of South American states after Suriname.
Its altitude varies between 0 m and 513.6 m (Sierra de las Animas with Mount Catedral).
The land area of Uruguay is 176 215 ± 64 km2 – including 1,199 km2 of artificial lakes on the Rio Negro – plus, on the one hand, the 105 ± 4 km2 of islands in the Uruguay River. On the other hand, the 237 ± 6 km2 of Rincón de Maneco, a disputed territory. The Uruguayan inland waters cover 528 ± 40 km2 in the Uruguay River 1,031 ± 20 km2 in the Laguna Merín and 15,240 ± 20 km2 in the Rio de la Plata. The Uruguayan territorial sea covers 125,057 ± 9 km2. Its population is 3 477 770 inhabitants.
Uruguay was born from the secession of Cisplatin, the southernmost province of the Brazilian Empire, and the failure of its reincorporation into the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata.
Spanish is the only official language of Uruguay. The national language is Latin American Spanish. The north of the country is strongly influenced by the Portuguese. Moreover, on the border with Brazil, the locals speak portuñol (or portunhol) border, mixture of Portuguese and Castilian. Uruguay has given Portuguese equal status to Spanish / Castilian in its education system along the northern border with Brazil. In the rest of the country, it is taught as a compulsory subject from 6th grade to 6th grade.
Its capital is Montevideo, which is also the largest city in the country with nearly 1,500,000 inhabitants.
