Where is SWAZILAND (eSwatini) located on the map?

Swaziland is officially called Kingdom of Swaziland (Swaz, Umbuso Eswatini) or Ngwane, synonymous with Swaziland, named after Ngwane III, Ngwane IV and Ngwane V. Southern Africa, landlocked between Mozambique in the east and South Africa. This small country of 17,363 km² (smaller than Belgium) is independent since 1968. It is a mountainous region without sea frontage. The name of the country (Swaziland) and that of the main ethnic group (the Swatis) come from the name Mswati II, “the greatest of the Swazi warrior kings”. The word Dlamini is the name of the royal family, as well as a common way of calling Swaziland.

Where is Swaziland (eSwatini) located on the world map and in Africa? The Eswatini, in long form the kingdom of Eswatini since 2018, sometimes written eSwatini according to the Swati script, formerly Kingdom of Swaziland, is a southern African country without access to the sea, bordered by South Africa and Mozambique.

This nation, like its inhabitants, owes its name to the king of the nineteenth century Mswati II, leader whose name means “stick of command” in Zulu. Eswatini is a small country, no more than 200 km separate north from south and 130 km east from west. The western part of the country is at altitude, the altitude is less important towards the center. The eastern border of the country stands out thanks to the Lebombo mountains. The climate is quite temperate in the west, but it reaches 40 ° C in the east of the country in summer. The country experiences heavy rainfall, especially in the summer, in the west.

The territory of the present Eswatini has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but the plateaus were sparsely populated when the Dlamini (from the Nguni people) found refuge there. Today, these inhabitants are almost all of the Swazi ethnic group, whose language is Swati.

Eswatini offers a wide variety of landscapes: mountains along the border with Mozambique (Lebombo mountains), highland savannas in the east with the highveld (part of the Drakensberg) and tropical forests in the North West. Several rivers cross the country, such as Lusutfu. Eswatini has no access to the sea.

Its highest point is Mount Emlembe, 1862 meters, located in the north-west of the country, near Pigg’s Peak.

With 95,000 inhabitants, the capital Mbabane is the second largest city in the country behind Manzini; Lobamba (royal and legislative capital) and Siteki are other important cities.
